About Us

For far too long, students at Western University were unable to find a creative writing club. That's why in 2019, The Spoken Word Society was founded to be a place for students to bond over the power of creation and language.

In 2021, we decided to change the club name to better reflect the varied interests of our members and the many types of creative writing out there. We want all writers to feel welcome and to find a space here. And so, we were reborn as Penned by Western!

We host weekly workshops that are open for both new and experienced writers, designed not only to help you learn more about the craft of writing but also to provide a space for sharing and constructive criticism. Evenings feature a short presentation and a couple writing prompts with time to get attendees to use what they learn in the presentation. Once writers have gotten a chance to write, we all come back to share our work at the end and receive feedback should you choose.

We also host and attend writerly events in the Western community and London area, such as poetry nights and open mics. As well, we highly encourage our members to submit their work to the many wonderful publications in the Western community. The heart and soul of a writing community is sharing, and we hope Penned can be a place for writers of all experience levels and interests to get their work out there.

We're excited to create, share, and discover writing penned by Western students!
